NEWS RELEASE
March 27, 2008
Acorn International has committed to invest in certified carbon offsets for all our business air and land travel in 2008. We pay for offsets that are certified by a third party through Sustainable Travel International (STI, www.sustainabletravelinternational.org) for all air travel, and we pay for offsets for all rental car travel through Enterprise Rental Car. We will calculate carbon emissions from our travel on business in personal vehicles using STI's carbon calculator and invest in additional offsets for these emissions. Most of our offsets are related to investments in international reforestation projects, consistent with Acorn's mission of building local capacity in Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability services worldwide. STI describes these projects as: "Projects to recreate critical forests and provide incentives to protect critical forest land and avoid the cutting of trees. Projects are designed using the standards set forth by the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Alliance (www.climate-standards.org)."
As a consulting company, the vast majority of Acorn's carbon footprint is associated with travel. We estimate that our travel-related carbon footprint, and consequently our committed offsets, will be around 100 tons in 2008.
