Acorn International’s
Dean Slocum
presented a speech entitled
“Managing Exploration Activities in
Sensitive Areas" at a Biodiversity Forum
sponsored by Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras)
in
Rio de
Janeiro,
Brazil
on June 20.
The presentatio
n outlined research on best practices, industry trends,
and outlook for oil and gas industry exploration and production activities in ecologically sensitive and
protected areas worldwide.
Dean has worked continuously with the Petrobras Corporate Environmen
tal, Health and Safety
(“SMS") group and Research Center
(“CENPES") since 2000. In that year, prompted by a major oil
spill, Petrobras
’s executive management team asked Mr. Slocum and other experts to help Petrobras
build and implement a world
-
class corpo
rate SM
S program. The on
-
going
work has included
developing and supporting implementation of an SMS management system, designing a performance
measurement and reporting system, and numerous evaluations of best practices and
recommendations in key areas o
f performance improvement. Establishing criteria for working in
sensitive areas and managing biodiversity is one of the areas presently being studied with Mr.
Slocum’s help.
